A red blood cell is packed with hemoglobin molecules. Each hemoglobin molecule binds with four oxygen molecules. RBC also carries carbon dioxide. It combines carbon dioxide with water to form carbonic acid with the help of carbonic anhydrase.

Other than carrying oxygen and caron dioxide, it is the only cell in the body that does not have a nucleus (except when it is an immature cell).
