My 4 month old baby used to take 30 minutes or so to eat. Lately, he doesn't seem as interested in nursing, and will only spend 15 or 20 minutes nursing. I'm worried he will not get as much to eat. Is this normal?

It's perfectly normal! As a mother of 3 breastfed babies, I'm telling you he has just gotten more efficient at his job. He doesn't have to work so hard at it now. He's a pro! Be glad that he's taking less time to eat now. My oldest took 30 minutes to nurse each time too and then I had my other two and they only nursed for about 10 minutes. All were fine and all were normal. Good luck! Keep up the good work!

My little guy is also four months old and does a lot of the same thing. He was down to 2 feedings a night until I went back to work and he started daycare, now he nurses 3-4 times a night (probably reverse cycling). We also co-sleep, and thank god or I wouldn't get any sleep at all. His caregiver says he takes a solid 2-3 hour nap in the middle of the day, but he has never done this for me. I'm lucky to get a full hour. He also nurses every hour and a half to two hours. Makes it hard to get much done, but he won't be little for very long, and it's been great for keeping up my milk supply.

I second that answer. Your baby has other things to do now and has the strength to take milk more quickly. Totally normal. He's getting plenty. You know that because he's still pooping and wetting. He's not pooping as often now, but he's still going. Why not find some local support? It sounds like you could benefit from hanging out with some experienced breastfeeding moms. Find a local chapter of La Leche League. Don't be scared--they're pretty accepting of anything and they encourage you to take what you can use and leave the information that you can't use. They call it buffet style meetings.

Don't worry, he's probably just getting more efficient at getting more milk, quicker. Or, he could just be in a slower growth period at the moment.

These sites have lots of good breastfeeding info:

*lol* My son never ate longer than 5 minutes after he was a month old unless it was to go to sleep.

As long as he is peeing, pooping and gaining/seems healthy he's getting enough milk -end of story.

Babies take what they need in the first ten minutes,as far as I know they always advised ten minutes on each breast, so I would not worry about it
