What does it look like? Just about anything. Asbestos is a powder that was added to many products. It has a high heat resistance, so it was used to insulate exhaust pipes. It was used in "popcorn" ceilings, floor tiles, insulation, home siding, etc.
About the only way you can tell if you have asbetos is to have the product in question tested. It is safe as long as it doesn't become airborne as a dust.
The 1980's was a decade in which asbestos abatement was at it's peak.

Asbestos is a friable (brittle fibers) that appears in asbestos siding and old vinyl-asbestos tiles. If you have the siding, you do not generally have to do anything to it other than paint it (but do not sand it as this will release the fibers). Because the shingles are brittle, keep a few whole pieces around to repair as they do not make them anymore. With vinyl-asbestos flooring, stripping of wax and polishing often release asbestos fibers. Do not remove the tiles if putting down a new floor, just refloor over them. Disposal of these tiles is an EPA concern and may be a problem, Removing the tiles can create powder containing asbestos fibers into the air.
As bestos is a problem because it causes a lung cancer called mesothelioma that has a high fatality rate.
