I installed Webshots and added to it's content beautiful pictures that I picked at Flickr and other websites and saved in My pictures. I set the Settings so that my desktop changes pictures each 15 min. I like it. It's fun.

I have "at" jobs that run once an hour and use "curl" to download a satelite photo:
http://www.weather.gov/satellite_images/national.jpg
Then I use Background Changing Application to "change" my background once a minute. Of course, there is only one JPEG in the directory that it looks in, which is the current satelite photo (gets overwritten by the "at" job), so within a minute of downloading the image, it updates on my background.
So my background image is, essentially, a halfway current satelite photo of the U.S.A.
