I was just wondering what a good material would be for the top.

The best material for the top is a kind of plastic called HDPE (high density poly ethelene) which you can usually get at a plastic store. It is softer than lexan or plexiglass so it won't shatter or crack and your edges will actually bite into it a little to allow you to manuver.
If you can't find HDPE, you can go to the hardware / home supply store and they sell plastic decking boards that are made from recycled HDPE that will work nearly as well.

I just finished making 2 boxes myself. THey tell you to use this stuff called LEXAN its hard to find, you need to go to a glass store to get it> OR SHEET METAL that stuff slides really good its just a pain in the butt to work with
