Five important events prior to 1850:
The founding of the colony (yes indeed it was originally a penal colony), the establishment of the city of Savannah (a beautiful city even today), the moving of the capitol to Milledgeville (until it was moved again to Atlanta in 1879), Georgia's involvement in the Indian Wars of the 1830's and 40's (Creek war in Georgia and Alabama and the Seminole Wars in Florida), and the advent of mechanical apparatus in farming (the cotton gin, the steam engine, etc) and the establishment of the plantation system. As for the tourist items, I'd definitely add the peaches, gold from a tour of the old mines at Dahlonega, the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" in Savannah, a Minie ball (bullet) from any of the many great Civil War batlefields and sites, and a bottle of Boones Farm Strawberry Hill to remember my college days in that wonderful state.

When I was in Atlanta, I purchase CNN souvenir items (mug, pen, and magnet), peach jam, some wine that turned out to be really bad (not recommended), and an Atlanta Underground T-Shirt. That's a very cool underground shopping area built into part of the original downtown (that used to be one level down). I missed the MJK memorial--I'd like to purchase items there. The CNN tour is very good. It was in Atlanta that I found that Southerners use ice in their orange juice...strange.
