First of all, this is NOT a trig question.
It's an algebra question.

We have this:

16x^2 - 24x + 9

Do you see 16?

Do you see the constant 9?

We multiply those two numbers first.

So, 16 x 9 = 144

Do you see -24?

Ask yourself: What two numbers when multiplied together will produce 144 but when added will produce -24?

How about -12 times -12?

Yes, -12 x -12 = 144 but -12 PLUS -12 = -24.

We have this:

16x^2 -12x -12x + 9

We now create two groups.

Group 1 = 16x^2 -12x

Group 2 = -12x + 9

We factor each group SEPARATELY or one at a time.

16x^2 -12x becomes 4x(4x - 3)

-12x + 9 becomes -3(4x - 3)

Final answer: (4x - 3) (4x - 3)

What does (4x - 3) (4x - 3) really mean anyway? Those are the two factors of your ORIGINAL trinomial. In other words, if you multiply (4x - 3) times (4x - 3), you will get your original trinomial as the product.

Got it?
