Because we are the most intelligent of the creatures on earth, and intellect seems to be the greatest and the most recent innovation of evolution. That is, it appears that life preceded mind, and consciousness preceded intellect, implying that the most intellectual creature is the most advanced and represents the most evolved of earth's life forms. But is the most advanced the best?
It should be noticed that only man has given an opinion on this subject, for obvious reasons.
The cockroach, if he could, might argue that adaptability and survivability is the measure of greatness, and that man has evolved past his optimal into a form that is likely to destroy itself, leaving the cockroach and the earth behind.
The only speaking and abstractly thinking creature has defined advanced in terms of the skill he alone posses, being able to speak and reason abstractly. It seems a little self-serving.
But there is good reason to accept this argument anyway. Man rules the earth, and cockroaches go where he allows them to go and eat what he does not protect from them. That is why man considers himself the most advanced of the beasts. Man's gifts give him dominion over the earth, even if they eventually are the death of him. His intellect conquered the mighty jaguar and its great gifts: fierceness, speed and ability to leap. And they allowed man to design and deploy roach motels.
So, man probably is the most advanced, but that may not be the most valuable quality in the end.
We're definitely in charge. For now. Ask again in a million years.

Arrogance. IQ tests are supposed to indicate intelligence but three essential points have eluded humanity. Protect Planet or you die. To torture people is wrong. Wind up getting heads chopped off through greed. Propaganda has convinced humanity it is Master Of All. Think buildings, transportation technology prove this wrong. The best technology is the brain. Will not admit will kill eachother if hungry enough.Think selves advanced for reason of science deny existance of what under nose call it mythological till evidence found. Said Sea Monsters other things did not exist. Found evidence called them Dinosaurs. Venus Fly Trap anything even tree could be equally advanced. Refuse to accept anything could have equal right to live. Depends on what thought of as human. Will not recognize it if does not look like them. Humans are racist towards other life. They are Supremacists.Humanosupremacists. Bigots.

Because up to a certain point we have the ability to control our environment, freedom of choice and the ability to communicate not only verbally but also in written form. And up to now we have not met any other species with those abilities.
However, I do not believe that those abilities necessarily make us the smartest creatures.

Because we are. We have developed language, so we don't have to re learn everything with each new generation. We have art, which allows us to express our thoughts. We have a natural inquisitiveness and curiosity about our surroundings, and how we can make them better. We have the ability to communicate specific details to each other. We are able to comprehend math. We are also able to learn from others.

What do you mean SOMETIMES?!!! Isn't it obvious, the way we tromp on every other living thing that we ALWAYS think we're the most advanced?
What's really stupid is that we think we're superior to animals...that is, until we're one-on-one with an animal that's bigger, stronger and faster than we are (which is just about every species by the way). Our brain is useless in face-to-face confrontation.
