Knitting is done with 2 needles and crocheting is done with 1. You use yarn with both. Some find crocheting easier and some find knitting easier. There is a difference in the stitches you use and terminology in the directions. Anything else you want to know?

First, I'm left handed. I knit right handed and I crochet left handed. I learned from books over 50 years ago. I've seen in several stores, including WalMart, kits that teach you to either knit or crochet. Also, I've seen specialty yarn shops that give lessons. If you have a person teach you, and you are going to do the crafts left handed, sit across from them. Then you have a mirror image of what you should do. Both knitting and crocheting are great hobbies. I crochet to relax and when I'm mad or upset, I knit up a storm. Good luck and enjoy.

Crochet: needlework done with a needle having a small hook at one end for drawing the thread or yarn through intertwined loops.
Knitting: the act of forming a fabric by looping a continuous yarn - a tube of fabric can be knitted using 3 or more knitting needles together. A flat piece of fabric is constructed using only two needles.

Knitting is done with two pointed needles (sometimes joined by a flexible cable) -- or 4 or 5 double-pointed needles when making small-diameter tubes (for example, socks or gloves).
Crochet is done with one hook.
Another major difference is that there are many "live" stitches on the needles when knitting, but there is usually only one "live" stitch at a time in crochet. (The exception is something called tunisian crochet or afghan crochet.)
(Both knitting needles and crochet hooks come in many different sizes. Both knitting & crochet can be used to create all sorts of fabrics and all kinds of things. And both involve pulling a strand of yarn through a loop.)

Knitting is done using 2 needles and the end results will give a stretchable feeling. One can choose to have a body hugging design in knitting because the piece will expand according to the body.
Crochet is done using a single hook (normally for thinner yarn). The end result is non-stretchable and normally design choosen will not have a define waistline.
I've been doing both for quite some time. I really enjoy it but my sister finds it very boring. From experience, it easier to correct any mistakes in knitting but there's no way to correct any mistakes in crochet.
I think a lot of people will agree with me that it is more difficult to produce and complete a perfect crocheted piece than a knitted piece.

Knitting you use two long thick needles to weave knots in yarn. Crocheting you use a small thin needle with a hook on the end to pull yarn through small loops you twist in the yarn.

Tatting uses a shuttle.
Had to add that in :)
