Well, I'm just wondering and scared because my dad currently copies movies he rents. Although my personal opinion is that it is not fair, I just want confirmation. (I don't like reading those boring policies. Makes me hurp.)

first off, let me tell you that half the posts on here are at least partially wrong, and a few were boldly false statements, such as "any copying is illegal"
you keep getting mixed answers, but not only does the following answer make the most sense, it is correct..
ANSWER: you can copy media if you OWN it, meaning you purchased it (renting doesnt count), and want an additional copy.. what your dad is doing is illegal..
however, 99% of the time people are prosecuted for copyright crap, it is for distribution, and not personal use.. you can EASILY get away with copying or downloading media, but as soon as you start to look like a business, thats probably when the hammer will come down..
if your thinking about bitching at your dad for doing this, dont, its common and hes not gonna get in trouble.. altho some older people will say its not fair, its stealing, and blah blah blah, the fact of the matter is it is done so frequently by so many people, that the only people who get caught are the people that are profiting from it, or massively distributing it..
regardless of if you agree with this, it is how it goes, but thats not to say that there havent been a handful of people that have downloaded/copied only a hundred times or so and gotten in trouble, but those are isolated rare cases..
btw, when i was little, i must have copied 200 movies from blockbuster and tv, and let me tell you, it made my childhood much better, and i remember those awsome movies like back to the future and aliens much better because i was able to watch them over and over, as well as have a large collection

You can copy movies you own. Since your dad is copying rentals, he's breaking the copyright laws if he uses the copies after he returns the originals.
If he does it for his own amusement and never posts them on the internet, he's unlikely to get in trouble for it. The cops & the feds don't police this, the movie companies do. They'll go after internet posters in court, filing civil (not criminal) lawsuits, so you are even less likely to get a criminal record for breaking the law. Home users are pretty much ignored.

If you own the movie, you are allowed have a copy for your personal use. This is justified because the law allows you to keep a backup copy in case of damage to the original.
Making a copy of a rental, is not legal.

Legally you can only copy movies you own, and can only be used for personal use.
Unless your dad is selling or passing around the copied movies, you don't really need to be worried about anything.

At the beginning of every commercial movie, there's that FBI Warning- which is proof enough that copying movies is illegal.

Yes, and no. You can copy them only if you have bought the dvd yourself and do not sell it or give it away. I also am shure it is illigal to copy dvd's from rental shops. But, whatever. If it is illigal, whos gonna find out?

It's against the law. It says that in the beginning of every movie. It's just a law that is difficult to enforce.

You're not *allowed* to, but who's going to find out? Just as long as you don't sell the copies, no one will ever know.

It is illegal to copy rental movies and there are very stiff penalties (including possible jail time for repeat offenders) for doing so.
