what is an easy way to explain substrate?

has to do with enzymes?

It's just the substance that's worked upon by an enzyme. In other words, the enzyme will hydrolyse (digest) the substrate.
Examples: Amylase (enzyme); Starch (substrate)

Lipase (enzyme); Fats,oils (substrate)

Protease (enzyme); Protein (substrate)
