He commanded the troops that were sent into the region disputed by the United States and Mexico; Mexico stated that the border was the Nueces River, the United States placed it on the Rio Grande. After war broke out between the United States and Mexico, Taylor commanded the American Army that invaded Mexico from Texas.

Many of his troops were sent to Winfield Scott's campaign in the south, but Taylor lead his depleted army to victory over Santa Anna at Buena Vista. President Polk did not want Taylor, a Whig, to gain too much popularity, so he shifted the focus of the American campaign away from Taylor towards Scott.

Despite Polk's attempts, Taylor was seen as a war hero and was elected president in 1848. However, he died soon after taking office and was succeeded by Vice-president Millard Filmore.
