what does it mean when a number shows up as restricted

Because of deregulation of the telecommunications industry, you can actually see anything on a Caller ID display. Restricted could mean several things. It could mean that the 'type' of line used is actually a restricted line...meaning that it has a restriction placed on it that prevents it from functioning as a complete line. It may be a pay phone that only allows outgoing calls and is restricted again accepting incoming calls. Prison phones will sometimes list the same way. It could also mean that someone has their telephone service listed as "Restricted". Most telephone companies will let you have the 'listed name' (the one that displays on the caller ID screen) on your service say about anything as long as it is not illicit, immoral, ir illegal.
