A standard 1st class stamp is good for DOMESTIC postage only. The actual postage for mailing a 1oz letter to Canada is somewhere between 1 and 2 1st class stamps. If you put a return address on the letter, it will most likely be delivered to that address marked with the amount of additional postage needed. If you did not, the letter will go to the 'dead letter office'. They will open the letter to look for clues about where it came from. It is impossible to say what they will decide.

Usually it will be returned to sender. I can remember getting mail where there was postage due, the post office let me know through a notice in my mail box. I had a choice to pay the few pennies or let it be returned. This was many years and I do not know if they still do that.

Yes, it would go as postage due and it has happened to me. The sender just never had a return address on the envelope. I Even had one come postage due from Austrailia to the US! You can always send those annoying junk mail pieces back in their postage prepaid envelopes without a return address too. lol

If it has a return address, it will be returned and you'll need to apply extra stamps. If you use too many stamps, it will be sent anyway (obviously), so that's the better way to go.

Use this to calculate it, or just take it to the post office:

If there is a return address they will return it to you. If not, they will forward a postcard to the indended recipient telling them they have to pick up the letter at the post office and pay the remaining postage. Sometimes they will forward it postage-due even if it has a return address.

Sometimes it will come back, "Insufficient postage".

More often on International mail the receiver will get a note to pick it up at the Post Office and pay the missing postage.

It will be "returned to sender" and say "insufficient postage."

For regular mail, it will cost $1.00. You will need at least 2 stamps. Priority and up will cost more.

It will be returned to you if there is a return address on it, otherwise, it will be destroyed. There is no 'd' in happens.
