this idea sprung from talk of Europeon Expansion..
would it be better just to start a whole new league in Europe called the ENHL who can also compete for the Stanley cup?
it seems smart to me, gives Europeon players an open doorway between America and their own countrys.
they could allow trade between the two leagues, so for example, if the Italian Stallions wanted to trade the Toronto Maple Leafs, then they could.
so basically it's a new league that keeps an open doorway between the country's but keeps it so the NHL keeps only 30 teams.
Maybe they could treat the NHL and this invisible ENHL like conferences, so all the teams in the NHL face each other properly, which eliminates the Schedule complaints.
and then just have the odd Euro game.
i unno, this seems like a smart investment to me..
i'm suree i will have 20000 people disagree with me, but does anyone else think this would be a good idea?
what suggestions do you have?

The NHL players in Canada and USA will stay here, and the Europeans can do what they want, while we steal their players. Money talks.
Chris, I read about you wanker for 10 minutes today in Men's health section due to Wings Fan. I had some really good laughs from some of your answers. You rock.

Hmm. I never thought of that.
Well, the Stanley Cup was awarded to the best team between several leagues in the early days. It could be interesting but I don't know how that would work. Would there be a NHL invasion of Europe at some point? Would the Europeans come here for some games (exhibition or regular season for the last two thoughts)?
And why would the European league have the word National in it's title. Just call it the EHL (European Hockey League).

It's a good idea that only two leagues could pull off: the NBA and NHL. The NHL and EHL could do something along the lines of playing for their league's respective championships (maybe turning the President's Trophy from regular season best record to the league's championship and the EHL having their own championship trophy). At the end of the playoff season, both the NHL and EHL champions could play for the Stanley Cup at a neutral site, a seven game affair. Maybe that could spark some interest...

just imagine how pissed off them Canadians going to get when European team wins the cup before they do... Honestly as someone that looks to the future it maybe a great way to get a longstanding permanent agreement in place and boost appeal, like some one said maybe you only see a European team once a year in a finals situation or a exhibitions type game, that ok. but might open Russia up even farther, be cheaper to get players over and gain interest on a global scale.

ok expansion needs to be left alone unless you're bringing back the jets or the nordiques. secondly with the whole profit sharing that we have going on tells me that we need to strengthen our fan base here before we do anything with any european team system.
i personally believe the iihf world cup is plenty fine for any international hockey competition but it would be cool to see a european nhl start up and have a best of 7 between our stanley cup winner and their whatever cup winner and then come up with a trophy for that tournament. the stanley cup shouldn't reside anywhere overseas so playing a european team for the privilege to drink from the cup is absolutely out of the question. GO STARS!

No bloody way. The cup isn't going to europe. If they want to play for it, join an NHL team, otherwise take off eh.

the only way i can see it working is if they did it old school MLB style, where the NHL and EHL doesn't play eachother until the finals and the 2 teams meet,
and then to save on travel, play a 4 game series, 2 in each home, and win by goal differential

Makes sense to me Chris and the logic is sound.
Let's see.....
London Hooligans
Paris Paramours
Berlin Wall Breakers (just imagine the headlines)
Stockholm Foppas
Bern Accountants
Oslo Fjords (Fords rule!)
Moscow Blues
Warsaw Brats
Brussels Sprouts
Munchen Butts
Roma Legion

Through the auspices of the IIHF, any NHL club is free to trade with any club team in a league that is a member of the IIHF.
If the Leafs wanted to trade Scott Clemmensen to Farjestads of Sweden for Ed Belfour, legally they could do it..............today............if they wanted to.
The NHL bylaws have always allowed that.
So...........whether people disagree with you or not...........the idea is already a legal reality.
