My laptop shuts off periodically. I would like to know how to see the real time temperature of my laptop? What settings show the temp and what are the fins (3 total) start/stop temperature setting? Are there any good free programs that can show the temperature and can modifications be made to avoid this problem in the future? The laptop in question is a HP 17" laptop with windows xp software and 1 gig of ram memory. Thanks

Well, don't know about showing real time temp. I do know that I have to clean the heatsink on our HP with 17" display about every 6-9 months or it does the same thing!

This is particularly true if you use the laptop on any soft surfaces (like your lap!) The fans pickup the dust and cloth fibers and embed them into the heat sink!!!

They are cleanable. Wish HP had better filtered them so junk didn't build up in the fins but they didn't. If you take off the bottom cover, you can "CAREFULLY" remove the heat sink, blow the dust and grime out, and the issue is solved! Not for the faint of heart or the non-mechanically inclined but is easy to do and does resolve the overheating. (Hire it done if need be!)

Hope that helps

There is a free program to do this. Notebook Hardware Control. Its free and will manage all your temps. (GPU/CPU/HDD) You can also under or overclock your CPU. There are other options also.

Hope I could Help

Wow, you shouldn't need to monitor the temp in the first place. Buy a laptop cooler. Maybe a fan in your laptop died.
