A router is usually hooked up to a modem and the router takes the data to and from the modem and routes it to the proper computer that requests the data from another computer. The other computer can be hooked up to the router with wires, or wireless, or it can be on the internet. The computer that you are on can be hooked up to the router with a wire or wirelessly also. A router hooks up different computers to make a network and can hook up several networks together.
A router allows or dissallows connections to your network. This is the firewall part of the router.
The router does not usually come bundled with a computer. Most computers sold now have the capability of using a wireless network. Some desktop computers may need a network interface card or device to be added before you can hook up to a network.

a wireless router permits you to use more than one pc on your internet provider account. and being wireless you can get your internet signal throughout your home without having to physically connect the cable to the isp modem as i am doing currently as i type. you do have to purchase a wireless router that provides the signal and some pc's contain wireless cards but it's not likely unless you specified it in a custom built system. most laptops do offer integrated wireless technology, check out your system specs for more info.

do you have DSL or cable internet?
wireless router - no cable to connect your computer to the internet, wireless like radio waves
yes, you buy it seperately, DLink or Linksys are good names
comes w/CD to load on computer - you'll need a receiver, (router to send signal, receiver allows computer to 'hook up')
Newer laptops have receiver built in - check manual or specs to verify
router comes with pictures showing the setup - if you've hooked up a stereo, it'll be no problem
