I don't think health class is appropriate for 6th grade I think it should be 7th or 8th in my opinion my 12yr old should not know what a penis looks like, how disturbing!

Absolutely a good idea. Unfortunately there are way too many parents in this world who for one reason or another are reluctant to discuss these topics with their kids. At least in a Health class they have the opportunity to bring out their fears, wonders and questions and discuss them openly and honestly with someone who can advise them. Does it make kids more curious about the topics of sex, drugs and alcohol? Generally not, having the information about these topics, seeing drawings of male and female body parts does not add to the curiousity it should bring up questions that can be answered and allow the child to make better decisions regarding sex in the future.

An educated person makes smarter decisions. Honestly, in my family sex and drugs were open subjects we were told everything that we need to know and all of our questions were answered truthfully. Out of us three girls two of us married the first man we had sex with and the last of us was very outgoing with the opposite sex but she was always protected. None of us ended up pregnant until we were married, none of us ever got ourself in situation we could not handle. We always new what was going on and was never tricked into doing anything we did not want to. I think we are the way we are today because of this upbringing. Happy healthy and our parents are real proud!!

I think that the schools are taking over too many functions that should be handled by the parents! It is not the place of the govenment to teach children about birth control and sex!

knowledge is power, knowing how to prevent things like HIV is more important. it's too bad that your ignorant father carries an antiquated belief that people will have sex only if they are told about it. maybe he doesn't know that people have been having sex for all of human existence - and most of that was premarital sex (gasp!) because the concept of marriage is not that old. or you could just tell your dad that you'd much rather have aids and die.

Being educated about alcohol, drugs and risky sexual behavior can save your life.
Your dad is being ridiculous. Believe me, I was never curious enough about an STD to go out and GET ONE!
Nor was I ever curious enough about heroine to go out and SHOOT UP!!
Knowledge is POWER!

I dunno, it's hard to say. I think, if someone's going to "get curious", they will get ample opportunities to do so without any health class at all.
