Hello!

I have really gotten into chalk drawing lately and am drawing a picture for my Grandma for Christmas. I have ran out of that Spray that Michael's charges 9$ for that seals the chalk onto the paper..my question is this:

Will hairspray work just as well as that adhesive spray? Or what other sprays do you use to keep the chalk from smearing when you are done with a layer/picture.

Thanks!

a non-aerosol hairspray will do the trick, just be sure to spray from far enough back that you don't get little droplets on your drawing. You want a fine mist to land gently on the paper so as not to move the chalk from the surface.

I am old school and do not use sprays. But yes you can use hairspray to seal the work.

Put down your basic layer and rub it into the paper and do a light spraying. Finish up the work and add a light spray then do all your final high lights and DO NOT SPRAY. The spray will alter your work and take away all your high lights.

Store you finished pieces between tissue paper (it is acid free) and I insert my finished work into a large 100 sheet cheep sketch pad for storage. As soon as you can frame up the best ones.

If chalk is like charcoal sticks, hairspray should work fine. Hairspray is usiually applied to canvas after you sketch out whatever you will be painting. that way, the charcoal sticks to the canvas, and you can paint over it without ruining the image.
