We found it inside the garage, behind one of those painters tarps. We have it in a jar, just in case its poisonous.
What kind is it? And IS IT POISONOUS!?!?!?!

If you found it climbing on a wall, then it is probably not a wolf spider (Lycosidae). If you found it running around on the ground, it may be a wolf spider, but there are a few spiders that look a lot like it. For example, there are some Agelinidae (funnel web weavers) that closely resemble wolf spiders and are commonly found in homes, garages, etc. There are differences between them, but you often need the aide of a dissection microscope to see them. Some Amaurobiidae and Dictynidae can often look somewhat like a wolf-spider as well. Without more closer pics, I cannot tell.

It is most definately NOT a brown recluse, and NOT a hobo spider.

It is venomous (as all spiders are), but it wont hurt you.

I agree with the previous answer, it looks like a Wolf Spider, but it is hard to tell for sure.

Now for your second question, is it poisonous?

No, but then again neither is any other spider. I am nit picking here, but a poison is a toxin that is secreted through glands in the skin, like that of the Poison Arrow Frog. These toxins are then ingested either by mouth, or through pores in the skin, or breaks in the skin. A venom, on the other hand, is a toxin that is injected either by a fangs, or a stinger, like those of snakes, scorpions, some mammals, bees, wasps, and arachnids. So spiders are not poisonous, however, except for a select few, they are all venomous.

Ok, now that we've gotten through that. The Wolf Spiders are active hunters, meaning that they do not build a nest in order to entrap their prey, but actively stalk and hunt them down. They are very beneficial spiders as they will keep the populations, of all of the real nasties living in your garage, under control. Although, like most spiders, they are venomous, their venom is not dangerous to humans. The venom of this spider will cause only mild, localized reactions, similar to a bee sting. However, allergic reactions to any venomous creature are possible. Keep in mind too, that a bite from this spider has been known to be quite painful.

Wolf Spiders have very good eyesight, and a sure fire way to ID a Wolf Spider, is to shine a flashlight at them in a dark room. If it is truly a Wolf Spider, it's eyes will glow when the light from the flashlight hits them, similar to a cat's eyes. This is the way you catch them at night.

I would not worry about this little guy (lady), as they are not dangerous to you or anyone else in your house, and they do kill many critters that you might not want around.

Me Likes Arachnids!!!

Need more information. What country, state are you in? Was there a web, if so, what did it look like?

Because of where you live I would not rule our the brown recluse, even though the picture is too fuzy to clearly identify.
Look on whatsthatbug.com and see if it looks like yours.

It looks more like a wolf spider than anything else.

looks very much like a brown recluse.
Yes, very poisonous. i got bit by one last fall, and I still have a very unattractive purple scar on my leg where the dictors had to cut it all out and give me meds for blood poisoning.
It needs a shoe-a big one, and check the area for more and spend $10 on bug bombs. Much cheaper than $4,700 in hospital bills.
