so many people have no idea what they want to do!
My advice is to look at what your parents are doing, esp. if they love their jobs. then take a hard look at those jobs when you think about your career.
But it really is serendipitous, finding out what your career will be. I met a guy who became a physical therapist just because he did a favor for a high school buddy who injured himself in sports, so he drove the buddy to the hospital for his physical therapy appointments. He watched the therapists and liked what they did. That decided his career, right there.
A high high number of college freshmen don't know what they want to do.
Just notice, as you go thru high school, what SUBJECTS you like the most. That can give you an important clue as to what career you want. Take debate or drama (acting class), and see if you like it. You could be a teacher or attorney if you do well in debate (or in acting class). Debate is also an important life skill, so take that class for sure in 9th grade. And if you love it, take it again in 10th grade.
Take honors classes, definitely not the average classes, because you want to really stretch yourself and average classes are just too easy. the more you stretch yourself, the better idea you have of whether you like or dislike something.
Join clubs, get really involved.
Definitely try to do band, if it is not too late.
Take 1 class of home economics--such a useful life skill class.
Take as much math and science as you can, to make you think logically, which is an important job skill no matter what your job is. Take 2 science classes a year, or if you are not taking algebra this year, then ask to take algebra 1 and geometry at the same time in 9th grade,so you can get in one year of calculus before you graduate from high school.
The more you push yourself, the quicker you find out what you are capable of. I was in lab tech school with a girl who all her life want to be a lab technician--her mom was a dog groomer and her dad was a haircutter.
Oh, yes, are you a good dancer? Are you really coordinated? Are you good at sports? If so, consider being a lab technician or nurse--it is so much easier to do those jobs if you are not clumsy.
Since 60% of the wealth in this country is in the hands of a small minority of people, leaving 40% of the wealth for the great majority of the rest of us to live on, the likelihood is high that you will be working all your life. If you can figure out young what you love, and also, PREPARE FOR 2 DIFFERENT CAREERS in your lifetime (something may happen to one of your jobs, maybe it will become obsolete when you are 50, but if you have another career you can do, great), you will be a much happier person, and certainly you will have more money because you won't waste money and time trying to figure out later on what you love. Figure it out now, just what courses you love, if you can. Then you can see later on what careers require the abilities you used in those courses, and you will be off and running.
Good luck!
Oh, also, start reading an hour a day, preferably at nighttime before bed. You do that, and you will have awesome reading comprehension by 11th grade. You will score really really well on the college boards, and will get into, and stay in,college, because most of school requires great reading comprehesnion. Reading fiction is fine, just read for that hour every night. It can be laugh-out-loud funny stuff you read, too, just do it nightly.

Tell your counselors to get the h@@l over it! I am 36 and am just figuring out what I want to be when I grow up:) Stay in school, get the best grades you can, push yourself to take lots of math and science, and you will have the background for whatever path you eventually decide!!

Senior High school is the exact same thing as High school, just a different name. Like in my town we have Austin Senior high (high school) and Austin junior high (middle school).

You still have plenty of time to choose what you want to do with your life. But it would be smart on your part to start thinking about what you want to do.Start weighing your options. Such as is collage in my future? If so how will I pay for it? Are my parents going to be able to help?
Can I get a Scholarship?
Or am I going to Tec. School?

HAHAHA, no. xD
your counselors are, well, not doing their job. their purpose is to guide studnets, not push them.
personally, ive only juts chosen my career a few months ago, and im a junior. i also know seniors who choose their careers AFTER they get their acceptance letters.
dont rush it, alright? youre not weird, just normal :)

You should be thinking about high school, not the rest of your life!!!!! Tell them that you are not sure, and that you do not feel comfortable pushing yourself to choose an occupation right now..... or talk to your parents about it.
