I just heard that NJ has abolished the death penalty, didn't Illinois do the same thing a few years back? Why are they saying this is the first state to do this in 40 years?

If Illinois still has death penalty, what did they do a few years back? I remember it was all over the news and Oprah was even talking about it on her show. They said that they were just going to have life in prison. What is the deal there?

Illinois now has a de facto moratorium on the death penalty. What is special about New Jersey is that this is the first time in over 40 years that a state has legislatively decided to abolish the death penalty.

Need more about this??? Email me.

"didn't Illinois do the same thing a few years back?" - No, they still have the death penalty. There are currently 11 people on death row in Illinois. See http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/FactSheet.pdf

NPR reported that New Jersey hasn't executed anyone since 1963. Maybe this is what you heard about the death penalty.

Seems to me, if no one has been executed for that long, may as well abolish the law. But let's stop here before this devolves into a rant about other issues.

> allow abortion The ultimate in hypocrisy

Not really.

Prisoners are human beings who are alive on this earth, participating in society, but who have been convicted of a crime

Fetuses are not-yet-human-beings who have not yet participated in society and who have no responsibilities to society under the law.

Woman and doctors though, who are parties to an abortion, are of course human beings who participate in society and have responsibilities under the law.

Maybe you missed that episode of Sesame Street where they sang:

"one of these things is not like the other,
one of these things doesn't belong,
can you guess which thing is not liek the other
before I finish this song?"

Hint: Comparing apples and oranges dude.
