The bible says thou shall not kill, but the catholic churched killed a whole lot of people.

Very good question.
Some claim the intention of the commandment was "thou shall not murder" which can be construed differently. At the time that the First Crusade was launched by Pope Urban II in 1095, it was refined to mean thou shall not kill Christians - - but killing Muslims was OK. Of course, the crusaders killed many Christians in the Middle East - not understanding the languages and not being able to tell the difference. (The crusaders were not the most intelligent people in Europe.)
There has been much hypocrisy in the Catholic church over the centuries, but that does not mean all Catholics are bad.
One cannot generalize. I teach world history, and I am hard on many of the "bad popes" - but I try to point out that not all had bad intentions and not all were corrupt. No religion has a perfect record . . . Hmmm - except maybe Quakers.

Sure - God wrote the 10 commandments to tell man how to live. Then man wrote the bible to find a way around gods law.
