No turtle stays that small, but many people say they do for 2 main reasons: trying to make a sale, and theirs never live long enough to get bigger.
Red-ear Sliders get to 10" average and need a tank of about 120 gallons for one turtle by itself. Painted Turtles hit about 7" and need about 80 gallons for the adult. The smallest pet turtles- certain mud turtles, hit 6" and need about a 75 gallon tank for one adult.
The Big Three for pet water turtles are:
1. Good water- about 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle, heated to about 75-80F, and filtered crystal clean (which takes big, expensive filters)
2. Good sun- a basking site that is safe and easy to climb on, heated to about 90F, and well-lit. Using UVB lighting is helpful.
3. Good food- about 1/2 good pellets and 1/2 live or frozen/thawed 'fish food'- shrimps, krill, worms (babies especially like blood worms), beef heart, insects, and small fish. Keep them small for babies. When the turtle is over about 4", it will add greens to the diet.

I love turtles and think they make good pets- but the set-up will cost you about $150-200 on average and they are not as easy as they used to say back in the 60's.

My baby turtle loves the sun. In the summer time, I would set up a kiddie pool in your front yard and put a large rock in it. Just make sure you check on your baby, because birds and other animals would probably like to pick up your baby turtle. Mine also likes the little food pellets you can get at many pet stores. try to find the right amount of pellets that fits his appetite, and a good fly once and a while is like Christmas. Anyways, have fun with your new turtle, and if it's anything like my 7-month-old turtle, you'll have many memories! also, try petturtle.com, it may help

What sort of "baby turtle" is this?
To my knowledge there are no types of turtles that only grow to the size of the palm of your hand.
Find out what species of turtle it is and look up care sheets and do a lot of research.
Turtles need UVB lighting, high-power water filtration, frequent tank cleanings and varied diets.

be certain which you get a healthful turtle. frequently cases once you purchase turtles or tortioses they are going to be unwell and require countless scientific care. i offered a pair of turtles a pair of years in the past and that they have got been the two very unwell and extremely virtually died, yet thankfully I even have an extremely good vetrinarian. different then that, they are extremely hassle-free to shield...besides the reality that they do scent somewhat.
