They are taught not to be proud. Spending 'too much' time caring for your body/looks could be interpreted as pride. Anything that draws attention to yourself is considered pride. So no fancy clothes, no fancy hairdo, and of course no fancy cologne... or deodorant!
Also, I think it's just a part of the culture they don't think to question... something unspoken, learned as a child: 'It's only necessary to bathe once a week'. They are probably so used to it they don't realize they smell. Also, the combination of hard work, no AC, and no deodorant makes even a clean person smell bad pretty quick.

Everyone group is unique. They use natural ingredients. Asmish people decide to live a certain way but only after they visit the fast life and decide if it's the one for them or a simple life. Once you leave you never come back to the community,.

Wow, I live in lancaster county but I really don't know the answer to this. maybe they think what's the point, they're just going out into the cow sh*t again anyway. I know they have to heat their water so maybe they don't feel like doing that everyday??

No running hot water? I am guessing that they boil up some water and have a bath on Saturday night whether they need it or not.
