In the first place, I (or you, for that matter), couldn't be "in" the tailgate of a moving truck; with or without driver in the front! You (or I), could be "on" the tailgate; "hanging on" to the tailgate; etc., The "tailgate" is the "flap" sort of thing on the back of a truck that you let down; especially on a "tipper", and the load slides down and off the truck. It's the "tailgate" when it's shut that stops everything falling out and/or off!
I wouldn't be sitting on the tailgate of a truck to start with if I thought that the driver was going to bugger off somewhere and be stupid enough to either park on a hill or not check that he had put it in "park" (automatic), or make sure that the bloody brakes worked! (Hand Brake Included!). If the hill was that steep, I'd make sure that there were "chocks" behind the wheels also. And "Women Drivers" are stupid! Ha Ha!

If the truck is moving slower than 40mph and not heading downhill, it may be practical to just jump out at the safest possible point. If it's moving faster than 40 mph I may need to try to climb into the cab, if possible. Jumping may still be the better option, but now it's more dangerous.

I would jump out while facing the same direction as thetruck and hit the ground running.

I would crawl towards the cab, reach over and open the driver door, then jump in! And drive that sum *****!

Depends on how fast you were going. If fast, then try to get in the cab, if not then jump!
