I would say the best thing to do for them would be to just be there. Hang out with them, do whatever you can to take their mind off their problems. Make them laugh, eat at their favorite place, do their favorite activities. If you really want to get them something, get them something you know will make them happy. Something they told you they really wanted, or something that will cheer them up and keep them that way.

A trip out is probably a good idea - will get them out of the house so they won't be thinking about whatever it is that's getting them down. Maybe a trip to a Christmas market or ice-skating or ye could go to the cinema to see a comedy. If they don't want to go out maybe you could call to their house with some magazines and some nice treats like a cake or flowers or something.
As far as advice goes, it's kind of hard to say as you didn't say what was wrong with your friend. I'm sure as long as he/she knows you're there for them though that will help.

go out with that friend in public on a very regular basis,
that should help get their mind off of their problems.
make it plain you care about this person.
be kind, understanding, and gentle.

best thing is to make something, if a girl: buy her a charm bracelet with charms that remind you of memories or make a collage with pic of favorite times too. or something that has to do with his or hers fav. hobby

watch their favorite movie with them...
Get them their favorite food or candy...
take them to their favorite park/mall/store...
play their favortie board game with them...
