A couple days ago, I spilled coffee at work. It went through my sweater, my shirt and burnt my skin pretty badly. It went through a couple of layers of skin. My friend told me to put toothpaste on it so I did. And when I showered, it stung pretty badly. It was an open wound but I put neosporin on it and bandaged it. I take it off from time to time to give it some air. Now it looks gross and scarred up and the area around the worst part is red and bumpy. Gross. It kinda itches now. Should I just let it heal on it's own or should I go to the doctor? I don't want to have to go to the doctor - it would be a last resort. Also, should I continue to bandage it with neosporin? It's no longer an open wound by the skin around it is quite sensitive.

I did this to my hand once. I recommend Vitamin E capsules (take 1 and puncture some to put right on the burned skin). This helps prevent scarring. Take 3000 mg of Vitamin C for a while. (This is excellent even for healthy people.) Also, drink plenty of good water. Finally, never put anything but cool - cold water on a fresh burn. You need to stop the "cooking" of your skin. ONLY cool - cold water will do that.

"Vitamins that may be helpful...
Despite a lack of research on the subject, using vitamin E topically on minor burns is a popular remedy. This makes sense, because some of the damage done to the skin is oxidative, and vitamin E is an antioxidant. Some doctors suggest simply breaking open a capsule of vitamin E and applying it to the affected area two or three times per day. Vitamin E forms are listed as either “tocopherol” or “tocopheryl” followed by the name of what is attached to it, as in “tocopheryl acetate.” While both forms are active when taken by mouth, the skin utilizes the tocopheryl forms very slowly. Therefore, those planning to apply vitamin E to the skin should buy the tocopherol form."

I think i depends upon how well you took care of during the healing process. I dumped boiling coffee grounds down my sleeve and was left with 2nd and 3rd degree burns and in time, a couple of years the scares did fade completely. I did however debris it every day at first then at lesser intervals as it healed more.

Wet some tea bags with cold water and put them on the burned area. Tape them in place. Change them out in 2 to 3 hours. It will stop the burn and should have been put on immediately. Tea has tanic acid in it and really helps a burn.
Mark that down somewhere for future use.

firstly, you NEVER, repeat, NEVER put anything on a fresh burn apart from cool water. Toothpaste is NOT going to help - it would have made it worse by sticking to the burn. Definately see a doctor or you could risk infection and/or permanent scarring.

that happened to me too, but not with coffee, it happened to me with soup. my best advice would be to just kinda like let it go. after a few weeks it will heal and the scab will come off. it didnt leave me a scar or any mark so i dont think it will on you either.
