Take the train. I am no ecomentalist, tree hugging type but flying to Liverpool from London is kind of daft. By the time you check in, get to Gatwick and all the other rubbish that goes with it you would be quicker taking the train and you can get centre to centre.

There is no flight connecting Liverpool with the capital. KLM had one a few years back but it fell through not because of passenger numbers but because they wanted the slots in London for other cities. I think British Airways had one which lands at Birmingham before going to London City, but I am not sure if its still running.
Unfortunately many airlines have tried the Liverpool-London route, and passenger numbers show it is viable, but the landing slots at London airports are a problem, for some reason the airlines prefer to fly an empty plane to Brussels than a full one to Liverpool.

There are no direct flights from London to Liverpool, for a full list of destinations have a look at http://www.liverpoolairport.com/page.php?p=81 There use to be one from London City but that has now stopped.
The other options are by rail from London Euston which takes around 2.5 hours for details http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ or coach which takes over 5 hours http://www.nationalexpress.com

Get the train from Euston. By the time you get to Gatwick airport, check in, etc. etc. you will be half way to Liverpool on the train and arrive at Lime St. Station before the bus from John Lennon airport gets there.
