If you use the windows xp cd to repair it, it won't delete your files.
But the error you described, about the blue screen, can be caused by software problems, or by hardware problems.
The best thing you can do right now for your computer, after you use that repair option from the cd, will be to make a safe copy of all your data, and then scan your entire hard disk for viruses, and defragment it. If the error persist, you may need to format it, (after you backup your data), and reinstall the operating system. If the error persist after formating, there is a hardware error, and you should contact a service center.

If you repair your installation, most likely you will simply cause more corruption as you will be installing an older OS over a new one. This usually causes all sorts of problems with conflicting versions of files and service packs being overwritten so I don't recommend you do this unless you are at the end of your rope. Instead, I'd recommend you do a fresh install over the old one and then reinstall your programs, service packs. Your profiles won't be wiped out so you won't lose any data.
With that said, the safest way to start is to attach the drive with the corruption onto another computer and pull your data off your profile and any other directories of concern. Don't forget about your financial data which is sometimes stored in the program files\"program" directory.
After pulling your stuff off, blow the entire drive by deleting the partitions during the initial install of your OS and then installing a fresh copy of your OS. I know, it may sound complicated, but....sometimes the best answer isn't the easiest.

The Repair installation goes as follows
1) Boot from winXp cd
2) Press Enter on the first screen (do not select the repair option on this screen)
3) Press F8 for license aggreement
4) Press R to begin the repair installation
Rest is automatic
Repair installation does not affect any installed programs or any user generated data. You will still be able to use all your programs.
But you will have to run windows update after the installation is complete, as the microsoft updates are lost

My new answer is......
No, it won't delete your files, but you may have to reinstall your programs in order for them to work. This is assuming you are doing a REPAIR, (I know I know, you capitalized too, but I need to make sure we are both on the same sheet of music).
A repair will replace/reinstall the Windows system files, but not delete files and folders that are NOT part of XP.
My son is an overly curious kind of teenager, and likes to figure out how much he can screw with WIndows before it will quit working, needless to say, I have lost count of the numebr of times he has 'repaired' his XP installation.

and take any files that you need backed up.
after.
do a clean install to repair.

but this is a good way to fix winwdows.

If you repair your files will be there but all the programs still be there but do not work. all programs you have to re install them one by one. Files you typed music you saved pictures you saved still be there, but only if you repair but if you install and format you lose every thing.
DO NOT FORMAT, REPAIR ONLY.

hi, first like you´re writing, it think you´re starting to using PC´s so don´t do anything, this happens to all, even to the people who are using a PC for years; so take it to a professional person, you will pay some money but you will be Happy because you will not loose any data.
