Excellent question. The answer is that nobody knows, and anybody who claims to is a LIAR!

One theory is that it makes the first intercourse painful for a woman, it tends to keep her from indulging in sex without being mature and having some attachment to her partner. This helps promote daddy staying around and helping out with any resulting babies, which is good!

Another is that the hymen serves as proof of virginity to men, which is desirable, as it indicates that any resulting babies will have his DNA.

The problem with these theories is that it appears that they go against every actual observation of human behavior ever made. Pain on first intercourse does not make you monogamous any more than it makes you asexual, and just because a woman may never have been with another man before you does not mean that she never will be with one after you.

I know! I mean I am so not religious but you have to wonder why you have some kind of "do not break this hygenic seal". Weird. I couldn't get rid of mine fast enough but lately I've started thinking.

I wondered if, because it is painful the first time round, its a kind of "are you sure you want to do this" post-it on your body...

"The main purpose of the hymen appears to be protection of the vaginal opening and the areas immediately surrounding the introitus during a female's developing years." (UCSB's Sexinfo: The Female Hymen and its Significance)
