Definitely try SPITZ.
It's been at the top of the charts for over 10 years, and Japanese people of all ages listen to it.
You will have a hard time finding someone who hates it (I've tried.)

Their album Recycle Greatest Hits of SPITZ is a good place to start, if you can find it.

well, i dunno if american ppl would like japanese popular music, but some are
wat, smap, hey! say! jump!(used to be hey! say! seven), uh, really good singer is hamasaki ayumi, ikimonogakari, utada hikaru, angela aki, ayaka, and alot more
