I have no idea how to read. Is x_0 = x(0)?

It is a symbol for a subscript. Read x_0 as "x sub zero"

The _ is an internet-specific notation and indicates that what follows is a subscript. I.e. x_0 = x₀.

I haven't seen that notation before but my suspicion is that it's supposed to be a subscript. X with a small 0 next to but below the x.

yes, it is subscript for x and y
you can write x(0) too
x_0 is also used in math editors like Latex editor, so it is more used on internet than x(0)
