So by my best count I see 55 (or 56 see above)
Hey Max nice try but the Netherland's Antilles are still part of the Netherlands for 1 more year, Montserrat & the Falklands are British possessions & Martinique is French. So we are back to 55 or 56 again.

This as about 28% of the world's countries.
If you were talking about population or area, that would be a different story. The reason why the Western hemisphere has less countries is because of North America(US,Canada,Mexico)
