I have a razr v3m and it doesn't have a sim card in it. As for it letting you send texts or make calls nothing will happen without it being programmed to a service, i.e. sprint, at&t, etc. The phone will come on normally but it won't be able to do much of anything.
Sprint phones do not use sim cards. AT&T phones do.

If you're buying a handset only then you WILL need to insert a SIM card before you can make calls or send messages. Without a SIM card you'll only be able to use the phone for emergency calls (911).
The SIM card holds all the details relating to your phone number and user account with your service provider.
You can pick up pretty cheap pre-pay SIM cards to install or you can just get the razr with a SIM card installed. Doing it this way might actually make it cheaper to buy the phone as if you buy a full package, the phone company knows they will get money from you for calls & other services and will discount the phone to tempt you over to them.

If its unlocked all you have to do is put your sim card in and it will work with any gsm carrier. You wont be able to go on the internet or send picture messages bt I believe you can configure the network to be able to do that.
Oh yeah and it might make some weird fuzzy noise but dont worry. And you can do regular texting just not picture messages. If you already have service using a sim card, and ur keeping your plan or whatever and just changing the phone, just mak sure you get one that takes a sim card cuz otherwise its not gsm, its cdma which means you'll have to take it to the carrier and see if they'll registerit for you.
Goodluck!

You have to have a sim card from another phone to make it work. Did you have a cell phone previously? The sim card is probably under the battery.

You need to find a cell service provider...there are many out there, including the 'biggies'...Sprint, ATT, and Verizon. Others are pay-as-you-go...you can buy these cards from Walmart (stores and online) and other online or physical businesses. Hope that helps.

you need to buy a sim card to do that. without one you dont have a phone number or anything. youd have to get one from a service provider, or if you have an old cell phone, it should have one in it.
