A pair of oppositely charged parallel plates are separated by a distance of 5 cm with a potential difference of 550V between the plates.A proton is released from rest at the positive plate at the same time that an electron is released from rest at the negative plate.Disregard any interaction between the proton and the electron.

a) how long does it take for paths of the proton and electron to cross?

b) how fast will each particle be going when their paths cross?

c) How much time will elapse before the proton reaches the positive plate?

The electric field between the plates is 550 V / .05 m = 11,000 V / M or N / C. So the force on the charged particles is

F = ma = qE

Both the proton and the electron experience the same force, but they have different masses so the will have different accelerations.

m_electron = 9.11 x 10^-31 kg
m_proton = 1.67 x 10^-27 kg = about 1800 x electron mass.

Now solve for the accelerations of each and use the usual kinematics to find where their paths meet and their velocities at that time. You should expect that the electron, with much less mass, will have the greater acceleration and will be practically all the way across before it meets the proton.
