If total government control makes for a safe environment, the best place to live would be a prison.

Right ?

This is actually a pretty good topic for you to have to debate.

I would say look at specific laws and proposed legislation, things like:
The Brady Bill,
or Washington DC's Handgun Law. These are both topics that are currently being discussed and there is a lot of information out there to research.

Good luck,

There are many studies, and you might start with Wikipedia which will have many references to lead you elsewhere.

But if you seek a simple explanation of gun violence in America, there are two basic observations:

1) Guns which are too formidable (i.e., semi-automatic rifles with 30-round clips) can enable one person to create a disproportionate amount of carnage before being taken down, even by armed persons.

2) Cities which ban firearms carry have citizens who are vulnerable to crime (they cannot defend themselves).

Possible solution: Shift gun controls focus more to limits of the power factor of a weapon and away from restricting carry. If everyone could carry a revolver, for example, crime would probably go down, yet there would likely be less mass shootings like the VA Tech incident, which by the way involved both points #1 and #2 above.

Currently there is a debate going on in Texas at Texas A&M about allowing students who have conceled weapons permits to carry their guns on campus. In light of all the school shootings and the most recent one at Virgina Tech, many students (who have conceald weapons permits) in Texas want to be able to carry their guns on campus. The school however does not want this because they belive it would cause more harm then good. Students however want this because it takes police too long to arrive. This would be a good subject for debate.

If guns were banned, only the honest and law abiding citizens would comply. The thugs and gangsters would not. They are not permitted to own them now - yet they do.

If laws were passed, only thugs, law enforcement and military would be able to carry guns. I don't want to live in a society like that.

I own a rifle, but it is for hunting. It is to powerful to be used indoors, as it would easily pierce walls and doors and could injure other people (I am good enough to know my target but the risk isn't worth it) I'd rather use my bow for defense than my rifle, but I plan on getting a shotgun for home defense.

talk about the Virginia tech shootings! how now a days everyone can buy a gun! about gangs and gun trades all over the world! just recently some kid started shooting people with Ak in the mall if am not mistaken! about the North Hollywood shootout that happend in California! about NRA (national Rifal Association) about laws there trying to pass so that not everybody can get a gun!

Debate the 2nd Ammendment...the right to bear arms. What did our founding fathers really mean by the latter right. Does it simply mean that you have the right to protect yourself by any means necessary or did they have certain limitations in mind. For example, do you think that they believed we should have the righ to own automatic weapons or just hunting guns. You can really extrapolate alot more from this debate.

I live in the UK and IMHO with all respect, I feel your gun laws are FAR too relaxed over there, and I think that is the general concensus throughout the UK. I have thrashed this out on many a forum.

I have linked you to a couple of the threads as they are pretty intelligent people on the site and you might find their opinions interesting.
