usually to talk about something in the common environment. if you are out on the sidewalk with someone:
it's gotten cold today
if you are at work:
the copier is working again
if you are at a bar:
the cubs are winning
if you are in a store:
hmm they are carrying more organic produce than before
if you are at a coffee bar:
wow that hot chocolate smells good

something you can both see or hear or smell

I would smile at the person before you start the conversation and always make eye contact and just start simply by saying hello and introduce yourself.

I've always been a big fan of "Hi, or Hello" seldom do people walk away from saying "Hello".
They would however walk away from someone saying, "What's happening hot stuff".
