Nothing really happens if she doesn't change it. Some women choose not to change their names for professional reasons. I only changed my ss and driver's license, but as far as work is concerned, I kept my maiden name because of the amount of clients I deal with and for continuity.

Maybe she's just lazy to do it?

My friend has been married over a year already and she hasn't changed her name yet, she hasn't done anything. I mean it took her years for her to obtain her driver's license, this just might take double the time. LOL Not sure why she is like that since she does have time to do everything. She is a SAHM, her child is 7 years old I'm sure she can fit it in her schedule to take care of those things she just doesn't want to. Her husband is a bit annoyed at the situation but he can't do much if she isn't motivated in doing so.

There's nothing wrong (or illegal) about her not changing her social security card, drivers license, passport, etc after getting married UNLESS she is taking her husband's name as her new legal last name. If she is going to change her last name then she has to update all of her identification. If she's NOT changing her name there's no reason to change any of the documents and it doesn't mean the marriage is invalid.

Registering the marriage certificate means you are legally married. After marriage, she may change her name to yours, keep hers, change it to a hyphenated form, or in some states both of you can adopt a completely new name.
It is merely convention that wives take their husbands name, no law requires it, and many women opt not to.
Think how you would feel to change your name after having used it for years. It is HER name and part of her identity, don't worry about it.

I think that you are making too big of a deal about this. I didn't get all my stuff changed for a while just because it was a pain to do and took a whole afternoon to do. Maybe she just hasn't had a chance to change everything. That isn't what makes a marriage.

The wedding and the marriage license is what makes you legally married. Names are just that...names. It is important to make sure that all legal documents have the same name, tho...so she should be consistant. I kept my maiden name WITH my married name...so either is acceptable for ID purposes etc.

There is no law whatsoever that says a woman has to take a mans name. Nothing happens if she doesn't change those items. I did only because it was so important to my husband but it does not seem like that big of a deal to me personally.

It depends. There is NO law saying that a wife has to take her husbands name. It really depends on the wife. However I truly believe that when you get married, "The women leaves her parents and takes a husband". If a women is going to take her husband, she should take the WHOLE husband which includes his name.

Nothing, you are still married legally with the courts regardless of whether or not she changes her name. Isn't this something the two of you should have discussed prior to getting hitched?

She doesn't have to change her name and social security number to validate the marriage. You are married once you have the marriage certificate. If it's that important to you for her to have your name, tell her.
