We don't want to use the bottle to comfort our little one fearing he (and we) will rely on the bottle too much. But we are at a loss for ideas for some things to use or do to help comfort him. He is 4 months old. Any ideas. Thanks.

In my haste I didn't put in as much info as I probably should have. Of course we have tried the pacifier, talking, singing, dancing, cuddling, etc. He just does not like the pacifier and some of the other is marginal.

We try a lot of things with him, I just thought there might be something that we hadn't thought of or didn't know about that would make crying time shorter. Thank you all.

Babies don't usually cry for no reason. So if there's nothing physically wrong with him, he's either bored or lonely and wants cuddles! The only cure for that is to cuddle him, so enjoy it. That's what babies, mummies and daddies are for!
You could use a pacifier, but we didn't and our daughter sucked her hand instead. Use a pacifier, and you have to keep putting it in his mouth. Let him suck his hand, and he can take care of that himself. Even a 4 month old can take a bit of responsibility for himself!
Probably the lad needs more cuddles though. He thinks the entire world revolves around him. He doesn't realise that mummy and daddy want to wash the dishes, read the paper or sleep.

Well a pacifier is a good option, it will satisfy the sucking intinct without overfeeding. If you don't want to build a dependency on a paci you can try things like swaddling (although depending on the baby 4 months might be getting a little big for that) or you can try a swing or bouncy seat. A lot of times the motion from the swing or vibrations of a bouncy seat will help soothe :)

There are blankies available otherwise known as comfort blankets, you can take him to a shop and ask him which one he would like, when he picks it out, make sure you take it everywhere with you, he will cuddle it, sleep with it and walk around with it.

You can also revert back to swaddling him when he naps during the day as well or giving him a dummy/pacifier if you want to.

Also check to make sure hes not teething, if you see him sucking on something or trying to bite down on a toy etc he is teething or if he has excessive drool, you can give him a cold face washer to suck on, this will help soothe his sore gums, and go out and get some teething toys.

pacifier helps.. I play soothing music with my little guy (3 months). Also try static from the tv (works like a charm and I have no clue why!) try singing to him or giving him a special toy. You can try rocking, walking in the stroller etc. Try a baby swing too. It always puts my little guy to sleep. Or a vibrating chair. When nothing works I usually put him in his carseat and sway him back and forth. Hope it helps.

Depends what your descression is. Some parents are acceptable with using pacifiers others are not. Same with babies. Perhaps you may also want to try a blanket, stuffed animal, toy (rattle, ring, keys, etc.). Hope these help!

When my son was newborn, i had a hard time trying to comfort him, so i bought a baby swing (you know those electric ones that you strap baby in and it rocks gently?)
It really did work wonders. It was the best thiing i have ever brought - not to mention a life saver

mine loved his pacifier and then his bear/ blanket.
The Pacifier was his favorite and it was the hardest to wein off after several years! He sleeps with a "car" now and that's his comfort.

my 5 month old has a blanket but has done since she was born so it might be hard to introduce this now, your baby is probably teething so rubbing his gums helps also teething gel is a must! using a bottle as a soother is also dangerous as baby will be sucking in air which causes colic... good luck
