I am hoping to build my fiance a small bar for our home for Christmas (I know I'm last minute). My father is going to help me but it needs to be easy. Ideally made solely from plywood and other inexpensive materials. It's going to be in his "man-room" until we are able to update it. I just want him to have something there until we get a better one. I would like it to be counter height and about 5' long. Ideally a few shelves on the back to store bottles ... again nothing too fancy and certainly not difficult I don't really know my way around a workshop!

I'm building one from an old bathroom vanity that's about 5-1/2 feet wide. I took the top and back off, and the front is already completed. Since it's not counter height, I'm putting on a riser made of 2X6s to attach a 2-foot deep counter piece to. The top is going to be a piece of plywood. Then I'll tile the counter and top piece.

For shelving, I'll put some pieces of 2x2 around the inside and set pieces of plywood in.

The advantage of using the vanity is that it's already a basic structure. I just have to modify it to make it into a bar.

Takes me back to the college days. A couple of saw horses with a bedroom door on top. Don't tell the landlord.

Anyway, I bet you want something better. The cheapest materials that will still look nice are 1x's and plywood. Build a wall with 1x, use 1x for shelf support, sheath with decent BC plywood. Paint it. BC isn't too bad for paint, but I would use AC or better for stain. Another option is drywall, for the walls, but won't be as durable. Plus you have to mud it and paint it. Plywood you just paint. You can use laminate for the top, but plywood would work, too. One thing to consider is how to attach it to the floor. Unless you weight the bottom down, it will tip, especially if people get tipsy. You need to screw it down. Also if you get lucky and know of a restaurant that is remodeling, you may be able to get an old table top there. I got a 3x5 top from a McD's that was remodeling. Been using it for a drafting board for going on twenty years.

this is too complex for this site. Top is most critical so spend your money on that, maybe buy some laminate or tiles to top plywood, the rest could be 2X4s and plywood, use glue and finishing nails where visible.
