this question was asked to me in a report i'm supposed to do for my history class. It also asks how the leaders of these countries (Menelik II of Ethiopia &King Mongkut of Siam) brought change to their countries. it also wants to know what these two rulers were like and how they were able to keep their land from being colonized.

They had stronger governments and enough strength as a culture to hold together in combat and politics.

They were willing to accept change and yet still keep their own traditions. But the main difference was that the had a ruler who actually ruled over the whole country. Most of Africa and Asia were made up of very small groups who were taken over one by one until the colonial power had control of a large area. So perhaps you should look at how Menelik and Mongkut gained power in their own countries.
