Santa Claus is actually based on a real historic figure so in this sense, yes he was real. Saint Nicholas of Myra is the primary inspiration for the Christian figure of Santa Claus. He was a 4th century Christian bishop of Myra in Lycia, a province of the Byzantine Anatolia, now in Turkey. Nicholas was famous for his generous gifts to the poor, in particular presenting the three impoverished daughters of a pious Christian with dowries so that they would not have to become prostitutes. He was very religious from an early age and devoted his life entirely to Christianity.

Nope, how about "Kids Santa is not real". When they ask why. Just explain to them that in this day and age no man in any kind of suit is going to sneak into your house and bring you presents. Just let them watch the evening news that should solidify your case.

Don't explain it to them, i think it's best if they find out themselves. When they do, its usually just the right age when they're too old for that kind of stuff, if they query it by asking you, maybe thats when you should tell them. Ask them the question back and see what their response is.
