Wasn't sure where to post this question but anyway......Is this a good drill for to do projects in and around the house? Was thinking of buying it for a Christmas gift for the husband but I'm not sure what to look for when purchasing something like this.
Any advice and/or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanx!

You picked a real beauty, no two ways about it. My thought on this is to what level is hubby going to use it? If he is an amatuer woodworker, that is a great choice. If he is the type to fix little things around the house and doesnt plan on using it very often, you can get a Ryobi 3/8" cordless for 1/3 of that price. I am NOT saying to get a cheaper drill. Personally, I would love it if my darling Hunny Bunny would think like you,,,,but she doesnt, and wishing wont make it so. Just remember, the batteries have a definite life span and the 18 volters are more expensive, so plan the purchase for the use it is intended for.

i presume you are in the US from the website

nonetheless its a drill/driver with no hammer action so it can do some drilling in normal bricks etc with special drill bits but not normal masonary bits which need the hammer action

do you need to drill masonry or are you timber frame? if timber frame and plasterboard then a drill/driver should be ok

if you are timber only its a reasonable size at 18 volts but i cant see the battery amp hours (1.7, 2, 3 etc) the larger that number the longer they last between charges. look for 2.0 Ah or more (larger cost more)

this is 2 speed so i think its a cheaper model, newer ones are 3 speed.

i personally dont like dewalt so my choice would be Bosch, from the decent end of pro tools but whichever you like

make sure they have a good service and returns policy for the duration of the warranty. also if he doesnt like it can it be sent back, sometimes real shops are easier.

in the uk bosch pro tools and some others have 3 years, dont know about elsewhere

get good drill bits

Your idea is a good one. A man can always use another tool.
My observations on the one you've chosen;

If you're only going to be using it for light household work the one you've chosen is overkill. A smaller, lighter one will be easier to use.
1/2" chuck is large. Most home drills are 3/8"
Variable speed is a good thing.
The clutch is a gimmick unless your a skilled craftsman.

I hope this helps

To be quite blunt, the only GOOD cordless tools come from Europe and no other place! If you want to buy him a GOOD cordless drill look up Metabo. I've had one since 1995 and have run in about 100,000 screws and so far only had to replace the brushes at about 70,000 screws. The drill is amazing and believe me, I've owned all the other brands, they couldn't hold a candle to the quality of Metabo. It really is a tool that from all outward appearances will last a life time.

Yes, that's a good one. Especially with the 1/2" chuck. Cheaper drills have a 3/8" chuck and the larger one can come in handy. I also like the fact that it comes with an extra power pack. I think your husband will like it very much.

Yes, it has a 1/2" chuck, it's 18 volt, and a respectable name in electric tools.

Yes . I use that drill at work almost every day.
I would check around for prices . They run 150 to 180. you may be able to get one on sale this time of year

Yeah, it's a decent deal. Sears also has a two drill combo on sale for 99.00. Either way you go you are not being ripped off.
