Thomas, yes I know, but it would be a little awkward to ask; what are the 16 occupations of your GGGrandfather.

I do believe that my Great Grandfather was born into slavery on a plantation in South Carolina. From verbal accounts he was a Chef and my Great Grandmother was seamstress. I don't know about his dad but I think he was of mixed heritage.
I've heard of Scottish and American Indian being mixed in that generation.

great question!

Rumor has it, he was an outlaw from Alabama who came to Texas in his early twenties bought some land and became a farmer who married and Indian woman. The outlaw part is the rumor, the rest is true, Anyway, he was killed by Texas Rangers when his oldest son (my grandfather) was 15. The records of why he was killed are closed and we have been trying to get them opened since all involved ( his children) are all gone. But no luck. It looks like they knew we could never find out. And there are no records in Alabama that he ever existed.

At least 2 fought in the civil war, 1 ran a store and owned it, and 2 others were farmers, the rest- anyone''s guess.
Oh, the 2 who fought in the civil war were fighting for the north, my mother has a letter one sent to his wife. He sent it from a hospice were Grant was recovering from dysentery while he was there. True story.

Yes... he was a dairy farmer, just like my grandfather(who fought in World War I) and my Uncle were... my Uncle being the oldest took over the farm, so my Dad went into business after getting a B.S. in Chemistry.

No....I never knew any of my grandparents....let alone my great grandparents. My father did have guardians whom I knew, though....and I knew the father of one of my father's guardians....if that makes any sense. He passed away when I was around 14. So....I suppose, in a sense, I had an "adopted" great grandfather until I was 14. He was 96 when he passed away....and he was born 114 years ago tomorrow.
