USA stands for United States of AMERICA. So that is why we call ourselves Americans, and I think most of the rest of the world does too. Mexicans, Canadians and people from South America usually are called by the name of their country, but if you want to be really technical they could be called Americans too, from the continent they are from, the same way we speak of Europeans, Asians and Africans, etc. What would you have us called then? United Statesians? USians? I live in the state of Georgia, so I am also a Georgian. I have heard this gripe before from non-USA people, but it seems really senseless when you really look at it. Basically, it seems to show a prejudice or dislike for US people. There seems to be too much of that in the world these days, people just looking for any old excuse to dislike someone else from some place else. Why? To make them feel better about themselves? Will, we as the human race ever grow up and start acting like we have some intelligence and good sense?

It is really an idiomatic mistake that has remained, and that the US through its culture has pushed overseas (to other continents like Asia or Africa). When I travel in Latin America I always hear that complain, since there they call us Estadounidenses or North Americans (which is also not correct, but perhaps more correct than American). I don't think that most US citizens think that they are better, it is just an abbreviation from United States of America.
Also it comes from the Italian cartographer Amerigo Vespussi who made a map of South America and a little bit of central America. Reading some of the responses here make me sad to see how many kids do not even know this basic piece of historical info, it is kind of sad indeed

The first ones to claim the name got it... the others wanted to call themselves something else...so they did... now they are complaining... for the sole purpose of weakening the US...with the aid and comfort of traitors like G. Bush and family... there is a strong effort by the One World Government people to destroy all separate "nations"...they have had good success with the EU now they are seeking to dominate the US... they invasion from the south is succeeding and the infiltration from the North is proceeding as planed... the time of The US as a free independent nation is about over... probably within the next ten years or even less if the democrats win control next year...

I purpose calling ourselves now "US Americans!" This is a homage to Miss South Carolina, where she says that we, the US American can find the country on the map.

It's a funny story really. There was an Italian merchant, explorer and map maker named Amerigo Vespucci. So after he discovered that South America was much larger than anyone thought, be simply named the continents after himself on his maps. The name stuck!

when when marko polo visited this area he called it the Americas, [large land] so when Columbus discovered it, he named it America, [land of the free] ya we are better, we use our minds to do things, not fight each other just because there religion isn,t the same or have a dictator, or military government, the people will fight for the country because they like there freedom not because some dictator says we have to, or because some idol says it right,
