Just wrote this very quickly as inspired by the line below...

"..started getting serious and writing serious rhymes..." ( Benefit, "My Story")

..turn on the news seeing serious crimes
had me feeling it was wrong to feel fine
then i had a taste of the divine
this spirit of mine
happy on the outside
inside crying
soldiers in innocence dying
politicians conatantly lying
reporters are distorters
taking their orders
with my own two eyes
i want the truth
i want true proof
but what does that mean?

I don't see it as an either/or situation. Free-style rap can be poetry (and not just verse) if the subject matter is universal enough, the thought behind it is deep enough and the word choices are inspired enough.

I'll be honest with you - I'm not (usually) a big fan of rap. But I do like what you wrote.
I think you have talent - and what's (to me) equally important, you are speaking the truth.

It's a freestyle poem. Rap is music. Poetry is written or spoken. If you put this to music it can become a rap.
