Hey everyone, I've been scrambles since i was 12 years old. Never raced motoX or superX. I'm currently riding a YZ125 and haven't done a scramble in a while, just trail riding all over the state, but I've rode about every kind of bike you can name. So i have experience with bikes.

I'm turning 19 soon, Looking to get into a sportbike. This is a sort of unfamiliar territory to me so any help is appreciated. But i've just started researching the bikes. The first two that jumped out at me were the 750 katana and the R6 (yamaha fan). Which of those two bikes would you look for to get the "best bang for your buck"?

I'm not looking to get into any stunts, just a casual rider. My ears are open to ANY suggestions or recommendations you have for any other bikes!! I'm just looking for a solid bike all around and somewhere to start. Thanks in advance to everyone!!

the katana is crap, I'm a suzuki owner and even I'll say that. They look like **** and handle about the same. Out of those two I would say that the R6 is most certainly the best choice. If you want the same thing, but with better looks and a little more power/handleing ability get a gixer 6 (GSX-R 600). If you want rock hard reliability theres no substuite for honda. I would shy away from Yamaha if I was you, I've seen a lot more of those break than Suzukis or Hondas, they just don't seem to be built as well.

Riding on the street is night and day different than the dirt.
A couple of things you need to look at before you pick a bike.
1, MSF course. Great bang for the buck.
2, Dollar amount you have for a bike, New? Used?
3, Now the killer. Insurance. Make some calls to find out what this is going to cost you. This may be the deal breaker.
Oh and to answer the question. R6, A better bike by far.

The R6 is a Sport Bike and Katana's are Sport Touring Bikes. Your a dirt bike rider so you do understand speed and control, I would go with the R6 you will be much happier..... I just "Ghost Launched" a Katana 600 off one of my freestyle ramps the other day....Just to see how far it would go, The carnage was great!

Go with the R6. The Katana has a air-cooled motor and uses the cheapest of parts available. Some people are happy with them but the R6 is far superior in performance.

I agree even if you know how to ride I'd opt for the MSF course you may even get a discount on your insurance with it.

I think the Katana's are plain and old looking. Opt for an R6.

Good Luck.

a little off topic but, before purchasing a sport bike you might look into taking the MSF course. I've heard alot of people on sport bike forums refer new riders to that. I grew up riding dirt bikes and finally bought a sport bike this past march. and i can tell you from exp. that street riding is alot different then dirt riding! also with these newer sport bikes they are alot more bike then first timers can handle unless you can control your urges that throttle it. personally i started with a 96 cbr 600 f3. good luck and keep the wheeled side down

R6 for sure. Lighter, better handling and plenty of power. Even though you have rode bikes make sure you start slow, i started on a R6 and i loved it.
