Iv spoke to a few mechanics that got into to the spyker F1 team last year and i spoke to the lad that was in charge of the gearbox and it sort of happend buy accedent getting into f1 but befor he went there he had an apprenaship with Cosworth and he then got a job with the Jordan F1 team which then had a cosworth engine then the team changed to the Spyker team and now from 2008 will be Force India and hes still there.
Also you could get a job in PR you get to travel around the world with the team i got showed around buy Honda's PR bloke in monaco last year his job basicly show VIP'S around the pits and show them around the motor homes and have dinner with them and make the Honda team look good.
If you want to become a driver unless you have alot of money you aint going to get there straight away if at all. If you havnt got alot of money start karting. Iv raced 125cc gearbox karts they do 0-60mph in about 2.5sec and can be geard up to do a 120mph and it has a six speed box , there is alot of talent that race and out the 40 lads i raced most wanted to get into single seaters/cars but i know two lads out that 40 that are in cars and they wernt the fastest lads they were quick but not the quickest but they did have the biggest bank accounts. to give you the idea of how dear motor sport is i had a test session in a formula Audi and for the day it cost me £1000 and for me to race for the season if i went for it it would of cost £50.000, also a friend of my dads owns an F3 team and to race for him it would cost £300.000+. if you have alot of talent and i mean alot because there is lots of fast lads you mite make it into car racing but you would still need abit of money. if you are going to go for it start with karting for a gearbox kart it would cost about £5000 for a chassi and engine and you need to get an MSA licence to race, i say start in karting because it teaches you how to drive and it amazed when i went in the formula Audi how simler in handling it was to my kart and also it teaches you race craft its alot cheaper to learn your lesson in a kart rather than in a £300.000 car. hope i have answerd your question.

If you want to be on the crew, learn auto mechanics and learn how to MIG and TIG weld steel and aluminum. That should get you in the door. All race teams need a good welder and truck driver along with an engineer. If you want to be a driver, the best way to start is with Skip Barber Racing. Win a bunch of races and start talking to people. Pro race teams also need people that are good with computers and Pi Data research.

Unfortunately, michinoku is absolutely right. Racing is the most expensive sport around. You have to either find sponsors or have a lot of financial backing.
