I don't think any of the spammers are kids ... I think a surprisingly small number of trolls are kids (in a legal sense).

I think it's a mixture of both. Kids who have nothing better to do than wait untill mom and dad get home from work, and bored adults who haven't had sex in so long they forgot what it's like.
